Eau Claire Miscues Help 'Chucks Win 9-3

June 19, 2008
WAUSAU, WI – June 19, 2008 - (stats) Simply put it was a rough night at Athletic Park for the visiting Eau Claire Express (8-13). The Woodchucks (17-3) earned their fifth straight victory against the Express with 9-3 triumph Thursday night in Wausau. Six errors and 12 runners left on base made it a long night for the Express, who were unable to capitalize on a slew of scoring opportunities.

Kyle Gumieny (Lamar CC) picked up his league-leading fourth victory with a solid five inning effort. Gumieny allowed only one run while striking out three batters. The 'Chucks bullpen worked four innings allowing only a pair of runs to close out the victory.

Leading the way offensively for the 'Chucks was Geoff Klein (Santa Clara), going 3 for 5 with a run scored and an RBI. Chris Wade (Kentucky) and Jeff Cowan (High Point) each added a pair of hits. Cowan extended his on-base streak to 20 games, while Brent Weaver (Oklahoma City University) went 1 for 2 to extend his own on-base streak to 16.

Express starter Ryan Hines (Nebraska-Omaha) drops to 1-3 on the season despite allowing only one earned run. In fact, eight of the nine Woodchuck runs were unearned.

The 'Chucks head out on a three game road trip starting with the completion of the two game set with Eau Claire at Carson Park. After a weekend series in Madison and an off-day Monday, the Woodchucks return to Athletic Park on Tuesday June 24th to battle the Brainerd Blue Thunder. It's Gilbert Brown night at Athletic Park as the former Packer will be on hand to sign autographs. Gates open at 5:35 p.m. with first pitch scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
