WAUSAU, WI –
June 15, 2008 - (stats)
It was a perfect Sunday evening for baseball at Athletic Park,
and it turned out to be a perfect ending for the Wisconsin
Woodchucks (14-2). The 'Chucks earned what is officially their
ninth straight win over the Green Bay Bullfrogs (7-10) in
dramatic fashion.
Bullfrogs starter Matt
Lange (University of Porland) dominated the 'Chucks through six
innings of work, leaving the game with a 4-0 lead. The Woodchuck
bats came to life against the Bullfrog bullpen though, putting
up three runs in the seventh off a pair of RBI singles by Bobby
Pritchett (University of Central Arkansas) and Kyle Bubak (Salt
Lake CC) and a costly Green Bay error.
The game would head to
the bottom of the ninth with the Bullfrogs leading 4-3, but Jeff
Cowan (High Point) came through with a two out RBI single to tie
the game. A walk to Kyle Wilson (Hill CC) loaded the bases for
cleanup man Brent Weaver (Oklahoma City University). Weaver saw
four straight balls for the walk-off walk and the ninth win in a
row for the Woodchucks.
Chad Moreland (Wayne
State College) got the start and was credited with a no decision
after working six innings and allowing four runs on three hits.
Rob Currie (Tusculum) picked the win, his first of the season,
after shutting the Bullfrogs down in three innings of relief
work. Currie allowed only two hits and no runs while fanning
two.
Bubak led the way
offensively for the 'Chucks, going 3 for 3 with an RBI and a run
scored. In addition to the game-winning RBI, Weaver also added
two hits on the evening.
Picking up the loss was
Matt VandenHuevel (Northern Alabama), dropping his record to
2-2.
The Woodchucks travel
to Green Bay tomorrow but return home for a three game home
stand starting Tuesday June 17th. The 'Chucks host the Rochester
Honkers on Tuesday and it is Wausau Youth Baseball and Softball
Night at Athletic Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
with gates opening at 5:35 p.m.
The
Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a
college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the
country. Baseball
America named the Northwoods League as one of the premier summer
collegiate baseball leagues in the country. For ticket information contact the Woodchucks office at
