WAUSAU, WI – May 31,
2008 – (stats)
It was good
to have a few new faces on wearing Woodchucks gold on Saturday
night, as Chris Slater (Baylor) and Aaron Varnum (Embry-Riddle)
spearheaded a 2-1 Woodchucks (2-0) victory.
In
Slater's first ever Northwoods League game, the centerfielder
went 2 for 3 with the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of
the eighth inning. Following a hit-by-pitch, catcher Carson
Vitale advanced on two consecutive wild pitches. With two outs,
Slater plated the go-ahead run with an infield single.
'Chucks
starter Rob Currie (Tusculum) went six innings, striking out 7
while David McKnight (Salt Lake CC) picked up his first victory
of the young season in relief. Arriving in Wausau, late last
night, Varnum shook off the jet lag to record a three-up,
three-down ninth and earn his first save.
Bombers'
(1-2) reliever Brent Morrow took the loss, his first of the
season.
The
Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a
college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the
country. Baseball
America named the Northwoods League as one of the premier summer
collegiate baseball leagues in the country. The
Woodchucks take on the Battle Creek Sunday June 1st at Athletic
Park. For ticket information contact the Woodchucks office at
