GREEN BAY, WI – AUGUST 9, 2007 – (stats)
The Chucks plated one run in the third, three in the fifth and
got eight innings from Willie Kempf (Baylor) to beat the Green
Bay Bullfrogs 7-2. Mitch Abeita (Nebraska) drove in four runs,
including a base clearing double in the fifth that broke open a
1-0 lead.
The win gives the Woodchucks an impressive
19-11 second half record (35-29 overall), but both Madison, its
league record 16th straight, and Eau Claire won to eliminate any
chance for the Woodchucks possible post season appearance.
Kempf struck out just two, but scattered
nine hits and stranded nine Bullfrogs on base. The win ends
Kempf's season at 4-1 with a 2.95 ERA.
In the fifth, Jeremy Barnes (Notre Dame),
who finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and a stolen base, started
the rally with a free pass. Darin Ruf (Creighton) singled and
Brent Weaver drew another walk to load the bases before Mitch
Abeita's double to right field scored all three runners.
Darin Ruf finished 3-for-5 with a double,
while Mitch Abeita's final numbers were 2-for-5.
The Bullfrogs added a few runs late in the
ballgame, but the Woodchucks comfortable lead held on as Rex
Ingham (Garden City C.C.) sat down the Bullfrogs in order in the
ninth.
Woodchucks will continue it four-game set
with the Bullfrogs tonight at "The Burrow" at 6:35
p.m. as post-game fireworks and FREE Woodchuck team giveaway
will accompany fans.
NOTES: Matt Trausch is the probable starter
for Friday, August 9 ... For the second consecutive game
the Woodchucks swiped three bases ... The four RBI are the first
ribbies of the season for Abeita ... Brandon Frazier has 225
at-bats, just nine shy of tying the Woodchucks single season
record of 234 set by Dan Augustine (Michigan) in 2000 ...
Elliott Arrington (UNC-Asheville) stole his first base of the
season.
