WAUSAU, WI – AUGUST 14, 2007 – No other
Northwood's League team can say, "We posted a sub 3.00 ERA
as a team!" That's right, the 2007 Woodchucks pitching
staff led the Northwood's League with a 2.93 team ERA in a
Chucks single season record high 603.0 innings pitched. The
Chucks struck out 478, compared to just walking just 197, an
impressive 2.4 walk to strike out ratio.
Talking about his staff, pitching coach
Mark Allen (North Central Texas College) said, "From
the number twelve guy all the way to the number one guy they
busted it all week long." A staff that saw very little
change throughout the season, just one pitcher was added from the
original roster. Allen continued, "They put their best foot
forward every time," which obviously shows in the stat
sheet.
Two hurlers posted sub 2.00 ERA's, Matt
Trausch (Oakland) (1.77) and Pat Venditte (Creighton) (1.76),
and six hurlers posted sub 3.00 ERA's, Justin Fitzgerald (UC-Davis)
(2.49), Rex Ingham (Garden City C.C.) (2.58), Willie Kempf
(Baylor) (2.95), Willy Kesler (Lamar C.C.) (2.74), Blake Martin
(LSU) (2.72) and Adam Morrison (Garden City C.C.) (2.96).
A starting rotation that had 35 quality
starts (6.0 or more IP and 3 or less ER) in 67 games started,
led by Trausch (9) and Morrison (8), always gave the Chucks a
chance to win. More than half the time you knew your bullpen
would be well rested for the late innings.
It was just the second time in team history
that a staff posted a sub 3.00 ERA as the 2002 Chucks team
posted a 2.53 ERA.
