Offense Disappears in 7-2 Loss

August 1, 2007

ALEXANDRIA, MN  – AUGUST 1, 2007 – (stats) Entering the ninth inning, the Woodchucks were being shutout and three hit before Brent Weaver (Rose State College) smacked a home run over the right field fence with two-outs and nobody on. The Beetles starter Andrew Robinson shut down the Woodchucks offense, striking out ten in the complete game win.

The Beetles jumped out to an early lead scoring three runs in the first, all with two-outs and nobody on, with four hits and one Woodchuck error. In the second, The Beetles extended that 3-0 lead to 7-0 with a three-run home run by Keith Castillo. Just one of the seven runs scored were earned as the Chucks committed three errors in the first two innings.

Justin Fitzgerald (UC-Davis) finished six innings despite the rough start, striking out six and not walking a batter. Rex Ingham (Garden City C.C.) and Colin Auten (Texas Tech) each logged an inning in the seventh and eighth.

Weaver was the only Chuck that could figure out Robinson finishing 2-for-4 with a double and long ball. Nick Nordgren (Indian Hills C.C.) drove in the final run on the game in the ninth and finished 1-for-4.

The Chucks remain a half game back as Eau Claire and Green Bay both lost tonight. Madison continues to play good baseball defeating Waterloo 1-0 and moving just one and a half games out of first. The Chucks loss drops them to 15-7 (31-25 overall) in the second half.

NOTES: Sam Freeman is the probable starter for Thursday, August 2 ... The home run was Brent Weaver's third of the season ... Its just the third time this season the Chucks have lost by five or more runs ... Its the 18th time the Chucks have struck out at least 10 times ... The Chucks are now 1-2 this season and 17-17 all-time versus Alexandria ... The home run given up by Fitzgerald was the first his given up all season.
