MADISON, WI – JULY 27, 2007 –
(stats) The Chucks
dropped an extra inning affair to the Madison Mallards 5-4
in 10 innings. A swinging bunt with a runner on third and one
out in the bottom of the tenth scored the winning run for the
Mallards. The Chucks started the scoring in
the third inning with a couple runs. Tyrell Cummings (Seminole
J.C.), who finished 2-for-3, led off with a single and Brandon
Frazier's (Texas-Wesleyan) infield single plated Cummings from
third. Darin Ruf (Creighton) smacked a sacrifice fly to right
center scoring Joe Servais (Kansas). The
Mallards countered in the bottom half with two runs of their own
before the Woodchucks took the lead again in the fourth on an
RBI-single by Vicente Cafaro (Iowa Western C.C.). The Mallards
again countered, this time in the fifth, with two runs to take a
4-3 lead. Cafaro led off the seventh with a double and a
two-out, RBI-single by Jeremy Barnes (Notre Dame) knotted the
game at 4-4. In the eighth, the Mallards
had an opportunity to take the lead with a runner on third and
one out, but a squeeze bunt was bunted hard back to Blake Martin
(LSU) on the mound and he quickly threw out the runner from
third to help the game go extra innings. Willy
Kesler (Lamar C.C.) logged the first five innings giving up four
runs on seven hits in the no-decision. Blake Martin relieved
Kelser and pitched four scoreless innings allowing just one hit
and striking out four Mallards. Rex Ingham (Garden City C.C.)
