WAUSAU, WI – JULY 24, 2007 – (stats)
The Chucks could not capitalize with runners at the corners and
nobody out in the ninth losing to the Duluth Huskies 2-1. Brent
Weaver (Rose State College) led off the ninth with a double down
the left field line and Matt Gantner (High Point) reached on a
fielder's choice as the throw to third was not in time to get
Weaver. A pop out and double play ended a possible deja vu
ending to the game as the Chucks won las night 3-2 in the ninth.
The Chucks will drop to second for the first time in the second half as Eau Claire defeated Rochester 3-2. The loss drops the Chucks to 12-4 (28-22 overall).
The Huskies started the scoring in the
fourth with one run and the Chucks tied it in the bottom half
with an RBI-double by Matt Gantner scoring Darin Ruf
(Creighton). Duluth took the lead in the eighth with a two-out
single, which proved to be the winning run.
Matt Trausch (Oakland) tossed another good
ballgame, but was handed his first loss in July and second
overall. Trausch went 7.2 innings striking out four batters, a
season-high, and not walking a single Huskie.
Trausch was the benefit of some great
defensive plays as Brandon Frazier (Texas-Wesleyan) robbed a
Huskie laying out and making a diving catch before Jeremy Barnes
(Notre Dame) made a sliding play in short right field in the
third. Later in the game Frazier also made a shoe string catch
in left center.
The Woodchucks out hit the Huskies eight to
six as Gantner and Ruf both finished with a single and double.
Wednesday, July 25, will be Chamber Night
No. 2 as all fans will be given a ticket entering the stadium
and have a chance to win prizes throughout the ballgame. Gates
open at 5 p.m. and first pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
NOTES: Justin Fitzgerald (UC-Davis) is the
probable starter for Wednesday, July 25 ... The Chucks are now
12-16 against the Huskies all-time and 1-3 this
year ... First time in three starts that the southpaw Matt
Trausch has not went eight innings in a start ... Darin Ruf
extended his hitting streak to ten games ... Ruf now has 16
multi-hit games, which leads the Chucks.
