A Couple Long Balls Give 'Chucks 6-2 Win Over Loggers

LA CROSSE, WI – JULY 16, 2007 – (stats) Two home runs, a solo shot by Jeremy Barnes (Notre Dame) and a three run blast by Darin Ruf (Creighton), lifted the ‘Chucks to a 6-2 win over the Loggers.

‘Chucks move to 7-1 (23-19 Overall) and Loggers drop to 2-6 (19-22 Overall).

The Loggers took an early 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single. The ‘Chucks tied the game in the third with the solo bomb by Barnes, before La Crosse reclaimed the lead in the bottom half scoring on an unsuccessful first and third double-steal.

Tyrell Cumming’s (Seminole State C.C.) two-RBI single with the bases loaded in the fourth gave the ‘Chucks a 3-2 lead. Ruf, the Creighton product, took Brad Holt’s hanging curveball over the left field wall for the final 6-2 score.

Willie Kempf (Baylor) pitched six innings and struck out four, picking up the win. Sam Freeman (North Central Texas College) saw his first action on the mound logging two innings, striking out three, before Colin Auten (Texas Tech) retired the last three Loggers.

Brent Weaver (Rose State College), Cummings and Ruf all finished with two hits as the Woodchucks struck out 11 times in the game.

The Woodchucks will take on the Battle Creek Bombers Tuesday, July 17, at 7:05 p.m. at Bukholt Park in Steven Point. POST-GAME FIREWORKS will follow the game.

NOTES: Adam Morrison (Garden City C.C.), aka Mighty Mouse, is the probable starter for tomorrow’s game … Both of Kempf’s wins have come against the Loggers … Darin Ruf picked up his 12th multi-hit game and his fifth home run … Woodchucks have won 8 of 10 … Vicente Cafaro (Iowa Western C.C.) sat out the game with a leg injury, his injury is day-to-day … ‘Chucks have hit five of the team’s total 14 home runs at Copeland Park “The Lumber Yard” … For just the third time this season, the ‘Chucks played in an errorless ballgame … Catcher Ben Long (MATC) saw his first action and finished 1-for-4 … The ‘Chucks have played in front of 19,917 fans in the past four games.
