WAUSAU,
WI – April 11, 2008 – Right-handed pitchers Aaron Varnum and Kyle Gumieny will
be headed to Wausau to play for the Wisconsin Woodchucks this summer. Varnum is
a junior at Embry-Riddle University, while Gumieny is a sophomore at Lamar
Community College in Colorado.
Varnum,
a 6’2” reliever, was named the Florida Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week on
March 18th and most recently on April 8th. He has
appeared in 20 games and has a 6-2 record to go along with nine saves. In 22.2
innings pitched his ERA is a low 0.40. Varnum’s strikeout to walk ratio is
28:10 and opponents have a batting average of .154 against him. Opposing
batters may struggle against him due to his submarine-style pitching delivery.
Gumieny
is a 6’5” starter for the Lamar CC Runnin’ Lopes. Lamar CC is the same school
former Woodchuck Willie Kesler played for during the spring of 2007. Gumieny
has a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts this spring which includes four complete games. The
Parker, Colorado native has 36 strikeouts in 49.3 innings pitched.
The Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a college wood
bat summer league featuring players from across the country. Baseball America
named the Northwoods League as one of the premier summer collegiate baseball
leagues in the country. The Woodchucks 2008 home opener is set for Friday, May
