WAUSAU, WI – October 23, 2007 – A pair of former Wisconsin
Woodchucks’ field managers just finished successful seasons in
the professional baseball ranks. Steve Foster was the bullpen
coach for the Florida Marlins, while Darin Everson was the field
manager for the Jamestown Jammers, a Marlins Single-A
short-season affiliate.
Foster completed his first season as a Major League coach after
spending two seasons as the pitching coach for the Greensboro
Grasshoppers (Marlins Single-A affiliate.) His bullpen staff
this summer finished seventh in the National League in saves
with 40. He spent three seasons as the Woodchucks field manager
(1998, 2002, 2003) and accumulated a combined record of 103-86
in that period. His 2003 squad won the Northwoods League
Championship, which was the team’s second title in three
seasons.
Foster, the head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens
Point from 1997-98, was recently interviewed for the Marlins’
pitching coach vacancy. However, the Marlins announced last
week they will not name a new pitching coach until after the
World Series.
Everson managed one of the best power hitting teams in the New
York-Penn League this summer. His Jammers, a Marlins’ Single-A
affiliate, finished second in the league in home runs with 50.
Everson, a former minor league baseball player himself, managed
the ‘Chucks in 2004 and 2005 and led them to a combined record
of 66-65.
The
Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a
college wood bat summer league featuring players from across the
country. Baseball America named the Northwoods League as one of
the premier summer collegiate baseball leagues in the country.
