WAUSAU, WI –
June 9, 2008 - In a
game that see-sawed back and forth between the Woodchucks and
Express Monday night at Athletic Park, Jeff Cowan (High Point)
had the last word. Cowan's two-RBI single with the bases loaded
in the bottom of the eighth broke a 3-3 tie.
Kyle Mertins (Santa
Ana) got his first start of the season and worked six solid
innings allowing only two runs on five hits in picking up the no
decision. Once again, Clint Tilford (Kentucky) came on in relief
to pick up the win, taking his record to 2-0. Tilford struck out
four and walked just one in two innings on the mound. The
Express threatened with the bases loaded in the top of the ninth
against closer Aaron Varnum (Embry-Riddle), but the right-hander
got Russell Hopkins to pop out to right field to end the game.
Varnum picked up his third save of the season.
Brent Weaver (Oklahoma
City University) had a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth
while Kyle Bubak (Salt Lake CC) and Kyle Wilson (Hill CC) both
scored a pair of runs. Bobby Pritchett (Central Arkansas)
flashed some leather with an incredible diving catch in left
field in the fourth inning.
Willie Beard (Rutgers)
picked up the loss in relief for the Express, his first of the
season. For Eau Claire, Brooks Pinckard went 2 for 4 with an RBI
and a run scored. The Woodchucks head to Eau Claire Tuesday to
finished opening day's suspended game and play a seven inning
game afterwords.
The
Wisconsin Woodchucks are a member of the Northwoods League, a
